Visa & entry information

The following information applies to ordinary passport holders travelling for tourism.

Mongolia has extended 30-day visa-free tourism for citizens of 34 European countries, Australia and New Zealand until 31 December 2026.

Visa exemptions depend on the passport presented, purpose of travel and length of stay. Different rules may apply to temporary, official, diplomatic and British National Overseas passports.

Even if you do not need a visa, you should carry:

• A passport valid for at least six months after your intended arrival
• At least one blank passport page
• Your accommodation confirmation and itinerary
• A return or onward ticket
• Evidence of sufficient funds, if requested
• Appropriate travel insurance
• Contact details for your tour operator

Visa-free entry for tourism does not permit employment, study, volunteering or other regulated activities.

Eligible travellers can apply through the official Mongolia eVisa portal.

The K2 tourist eVisa generally allows a tourism stay of up to 30 days. Applicants should normally be prepared to provide:

• A passport valid for at least 180 days
• A clear passport copy and recent photograph
• Accommodation and travel details
• A proposed itinerary
• A valid email address
• A payment card for the visa fee

Apply well before departure in case additional documents are requested. Visa fees are non-refundable.

If approved, carry both printed and digital copies of your eVisa and travel with the passport used in your application. An eVisa is normally non-extendable and does not guarantee entry, as the final decision rests with Mongolian border authorities.

If you are not eligible for visa-free entry or an eVisa, apply through the Mongolian embassy or consulate responsible for your country of residence.

A tourist visa application may require:

• A completed application form
• Your original passport
• A recent passport photograph
• Flight and accommodation confirmations
• Your proposed itinerary
• Evidence of sufficient funds
• A visa invitation or prior permission, where required
• Payment of the applicable fee

Requirements, fees and processing times vary. Always follow the instructions provided by the relevant diplomatic mission.

Some travellers may require an invitation letter or prior visa permission. For confirmed Highlight Mongolia travellers, we can advise on the usual requirements and, where applicable and subject to eligibility, provide an invitation letter, confirmed itinerary or accommodation information.

An invitation letter supports an application but does not guarantee approval. Visa decisions are made solely by the relevant authorities.

A visa on arrival is available only in limited circumstances and usually requires prior written approval from the Immigration Agency.

The individual or organisation providing your accommodation must register you with the Immigration Agency within 48 hours of arrival. Hotels and registered accommodation providers normally complete this for their guests.

If you are staying in a private home, confirm who will register you.

Every child must have a valid passport and, where required, an individual visa.

A parent travelling alone with a child, or an adult travelling with someone else's child, may be asked to present a birth certificate, notarised parental consent or custody documents. Confirm the requirements with your airline and the relevant Mongolian embassy before departure.

Travellers entering through China or Russia must also meet those countries' visa and transit requirements.

Not every Mongolian land border accepts international travellers. Confirm that your intended crossing is open and accepts your passport and visa type before finalising your journey.
